Bounces, complaints and the suppression list

4 min read

The suppression list is your workspace's do-not-send list. Any address on it is skipped on every send, from the API, SMTP and campaigns.

How addresses get there

  • Hard bounce: the mailbox does not exist. Added automatically.
  • Complaint: the person clicked "Report spam". Added automatically.
  • Unsubscribe: the person used the unsubscribe link or their mail app's unsubscribe button.
  • Manual: you added it under Suppressions.

Soft bounces

Temporary problems (full mailbox, server busy) are retried with backoff and do not suppress the address.

Removing an address

Admins can remove an address from Suppressions, for example after a typo was fixed. Never remove complaints or unsubscribes without the person's new, clear consent.

The AI bounce explainer on each failed message tells you in plain words why it bounced and what to do.
